Govt guarantees security of workers in Jordan

THE Myanmar government has stepped in to help ensure the security of Myanmar women workers in Jordan after a factory-floor fight that left several of them injured.
The fight broke out in a Chinese-owned garment factory in Jordan between the Myanmar workers and workers from another country, according to a government statement that did not identify the other country.
The clash took place on January 5 at the Century Miracle Company, where about 600 Myanmar garment workers are employed. Fearing for their safety, the Myanmar workers then refused to go back to work without guarantees from the management for their safety. A number of them were injured in the fight.
The government then sent Myanmar’s ambassador to Israel, U Myint Swe, to Jordan on January 13 to meet with the factory management to resolve the problem, the government said in a statement. Myanmar has no diplomatic relations with Jordan.
Ambassador U Myint Swe met with the factory management board. As a result, the management issued a written guarantee that the security of the Myanmar workers at the factory would be protected, and that the workers would be safe to come back to work, the statement said. The management also agreed to compensate the injured workers, and to pay them for the time spent not working.
The workers from the other country involved in the fight made a public apology on January 15. After meeting with ambassador U Myint Swe, the Myanmar staff agreed to go back to work. The statement said the government was taking all necessary action to safeguard the interests of the Myanmar people both inside and outside the country.
