SPRING is here, which for Myanmar means things are heating up. To cope with the weather people are investing in new clothes made from cotton.
“As the weather is hotter now people are choosing to wear more cotton. There are plenty of new designs this year, with a preference for thin cotton,” said designer Sann Bauk Ya, owner of Shari fabric shop.
Cotton has always been popular in summer but this year it is especially common. Even the thicker fabrics made locally are selling well, says Tatee, a designer who owns a fashion shop.
“People notice the difference in quality between cotton fabric and nylon,” she said.
Some of the rougher fabrics made in Mandalay are proving popular for simple blouses and longyi although these materials are too stiff to be used in gowns.
“The sale of fabric has been brisk since November. People even like the simple fabrics produced by Industrial (1),” said Daw San San Ye, who runs a fabric shop in Bogyoke market.
