Students
who want to work with animals, often in the remote areas
in Myanmar, can study veterinary science courses, which
accept 100 students a year. Also, the Institute of Agriculture
accepts about 300 students and the Institute of Forestry
about 50 students a year.

| “My son is in grade nine, I was
also grade nine. Parents who care about education hope their
children learn the entire curriculum, from kindergarten to
matriculation,” |

 “We
have been developing the skills of those who are not able
to learn these managerial subjects at Yangon Institute of
Economics. There are currently more than 10,000 private companies
in Myanmar but the supply capacity for white-collar staff
educated in managerial subjects is small compared to the demand.” |

| “Most businesses in the past practiced
a career ladder system, which promoted an employee based on
their level of experience and service. But businesses today
increasingly opt to use an open system, which promotes an
employee based on their skills and personality,” |

 “We
have just a little fund,” he said. “We save as
much as we can and spend economically. Sometimes we are forced
spend money set aside for general funding.” |

| “I think most of the parents are
now coming to know the benefits of summer schools. We can
say this because there are more parents making enquiries about
summer school and also more students enrolling,” |

 “We
care and teach children to develop their mental, physical,
emotional, and social skills. For example, we put them in
teams to show the children how to treat each other and work
cooperatively, developing their social skills,” |

 Some
have misinterpreted “professional” as “one
who works for money”. For me, a professional is a person
who is skillful and has a lot of knowledge in a particular
field. He is also accountable for criticising or commenting
on the subject he specialises. In the United Nations, staff
are classified into two groups – professionals and general
service. Another meaning for professional is who has enough
skill in a profession to work and earn a living in it. |

 “When
my twin sons started school I didn’t bother making the
school uniform because I wanted it to look good and last a
long time. So instead I bought the ready-made uniform that
I know I can trust,” |

 “We
also give London-based City and Guilds’ diploma-level
engineering courses. They are six month and one year courses.
People can find jobs easily locally and abroad if they hold

 “I
believe the way young doctors are taught has changed over
the past 30 years because the number of students has increased,”
Dr U Ko Ko said. “The students cannot be given as close
supervision.” |

| Certainly some of the young,
first-year students who go abroad for the first time face
some language problems. But, in fact, I did not experience
much culture shock here as most of ASEAN countries have similar
cultures, besides some food differences. But surely it would
be different if I were studying in the US or Europe. |

 “You
need to hold high points in this exam and it will be better
if you also have a bachelor degree or a diploma relevant to
the subject you want to apply for,” she said. “Another
requirement taken for granted is you must have passed the
matriculation exam.” |

I’ve
been in Myanmar more than ten years and at ISY for seven
and a half years. Before this I was at British Council for
two and a half years. In British Council, I started as a
regular teacher and I ended up as the youth learning coordinator,
in charge of the children’s education. And before
that I was in Mandalay at a Myanmar-owned language school
for one year.

In
Singapore, a student’s academic schedule fluctuates
between tutorials, lectures, seminars, laboratories, and
library. The academic system puts a lot of emphasis on independent
study. Students are expected to do research and write essay-style
papers even from their first year and to perform a great
deal of independent study in order to achieve high marks.
