The first prize of K1 million went to Thein Sine for his “Dream Tree” elephant, while the K500,000 second prize was claimed by Ye Aung Myat and his “Hi Boss” piece. Dawei Tu Tu earned K330,000 for his third-place “Free Elephant”.

 

TAXIS in Yangon will be required to install fare meters starting January 1 under a directive issued last month by the Yangon Division Supervisory Committee Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport, said a senior police official.

THE government last week approved the appointment of Mr Mazlan Bin Muhammad as Malaysia’s new ambassador to Myanmar. The 51-year-old career diplomat will replace Mr Shaharuddin Bin Mohamad Som, who left Myanmar in October after serving two years in Yangon.
 

National Kandawgyi Garden will celebrate its 76th anniversary with a flower festival from December 12 to January 12 – which will be highlighted by the opening of an international-standard orchid garden – and with a music festival from December 14 to 16.

 

SIX volunteer artists from Myanmar who have been working at the Global Pagoda in Mumbai, India, since June 2006 say they are proud to have the opportunity to create paintings illustrating episodes from the Buddha’s life to display at the pagoda’s museum.

GEM SALE BRINGS IN $150 MILLION: A Myanma Gems Enterprise staff member cleans jade during the MGE’s 13-day auction in Yangon that ended November 26. The state-run enterprise sold precious stones worth US$150 million during the gem emporium, an official from the MGE said. “It was successful,” the official told AFP. The MGE had put some 5500 lots of jade, gems and pearls, worth nearly $300 million up for sale. State media said a total of 3618 lots of jade, gems and pearls were sold during the auction. The most expensive jade lot at the auction, a 171-kilogram block with a floor price of 80 million euros, was not sold. Pic: AFP
