“There were fewer raw peanuts available after a poor harvest in Upper Myanmar but healthy harvest from Rakhine amply compensated for this before the October harvest time arrives. Otherwise, peanut oil prices might well have risen even higher,”

MYANMAR’s largest conglomerate has allocated K2 billion (US$2 million) for rescue and rehabilitation work for the victims of Cyclone Nargis, its spokesman said last week.

The storm, which struck most heavily at the Yangon and Ayeyarwady Divisions, inflicted damage on about 55 percent of the of the country’s fisheries sector.

“In the current economic situation, people tend to spend their money on other things than gold, especially since schools are now open. People only buy gold if they have money to spare,”

“We’re constructing housing and facilities for 12,000 families at Nga Pu Taw township on Hainggyi island. We’ve been using 120 labourers and are about 50 percent complete,”

HOUSE OF THE WEEK
WITH five bedrooms split over two storeys, this South Okkalapa house features a warm and attractively designed interior. And it’s just as well because the three-year-old house’s façade does not stand out from surrounding houses either but it’s clean and hides a house that’s just perfect for a family.

“Due to concerted efforts of the ministries concerned, the people and private entrepreneurs, the relief task for the first phase has been completed in a short time and the rehabilitation task is in progress for the second phase,”

“We could not do it when they died, or on the seventh day after their death. We could not even bury them properly. So we decided to perform the one-month commemoration according to Buddhist tradition,”

“There are elements of our program that are encouraging as we are getting food to people who need it. The key for us is to ensure the sustained flow of food into those affected areas,”

“This is not true, we can guarantee that,” said Daw Toe Nandar Tin, an executive member of the federation. “There have been no cases where fingers have been found in fish stomachs. It’s just a rumour.”

ORGANISERS of the Myanmar Contemporary Art Awards 2008 have hailed the competition a success following the exhibition of finalists at Yangon’s River Gallery on May 30.

Hip hop fans were keen to enjoy the show, the first big entertainment event since Nargis, and the artistes — Kyatpha, Jenny, Yatha, Linya, Htein Winn, Wine Su Khine Thein and Sandy Myint Lwin — sang as they walked to and fro on the catwalk, disregarding the drenching rain.

“This is one of the prizes that athletes dream of winning. I’m really proud to be selected from among all the gold medallists in the country. I think I was chosen as I got a good result in Korea Open. It’s the highest level for taekwondo, and I came third in the competition,”
